My First Widget (Not!)

I tried adding a Widget to my Blog.  There is a poll on BlogHer asking where the '09 Conference should be.  I clicked "add this poll to your blog." I told it to go to Live Spaces. It asked me to log-in, I did.  I answered "Install" when it told me I had to be a developer to Install.  Perhaps it knows I don't know what I'm doing.  It appeared in the blog. I can position it where I want it to go. As soon as I sign-out, it disappears!  It's there as I'm editing this post, but when I sign-out gone until the next time I sign in!

I'll try again soon!

Update: So I tried again, and while the first widget I put in is still visible when I'm in edit mode, the second one I put in shows up all the time.  It's a bit simpler, because you don't see the Poll unless you click the View Poll button.  But, it does give the poll and the current results in the same, cute little dialog box, so that's good too.  By the way, Vote for SF So I can go again next year!

To Blog or Not to Blog

I went to the 4th Annual BlogHer conference in San Francisco a few weeks ago to learn about blogging. I learned a lot. I learned that I wanted to blog. I didn't figure out exactly what I should blog about.  As a person who teaches people how to use computers, and is good at talking, I figure it is a natual fit.  So, I am going to start by blogging about blogging.  When I tell people that I went to BlogHer and how much I enjoyed the people, the information, the electricity, they ask me more.  This will be a forum to share what I learned and what I will learn as I go down the path to becoming a blogger.  I am currently reading Blogging for Dummies and am finding it very enlightening.

I am going to start by working and playing with the following blogging platforms:

1. Windows Live

2. Blogger (I've used this a little, and found it very easy to set up.)

3. WordPress

So, here I am on Windows Live. I found it easy to start. I created an account. I chose a theme and template. I moved things around a bit and hid the items that I don't plan on using right away. I am happy it has things like an RSS Feed link so that people can subscribe to my blog. I didn't have to figure out how to set that up.

I have found this blog entry very easy to create, including adding the links.

I am not sure that I can make it look original enough, but for now, I'm interested in starting to write. I'll worry about design a little later.

Let me know what you think!

Update: I went to publish this post and it told me that it couldn't do it so try again later!  There was no obvious way to save a draft of the entry, so I copied and pasted it into a Word document.  I signed out, then in again, copied my text back in and it worked fine. Hopefully that won't happen too often!
